About chiropractic
Chiropractors use a specific type of manipulation called an adjustment to improve many health problems that are related to our skeletal and muscular systems. Spinal conditions like lower back or neck pain, conditions of other areas such as the knees and shoulders, as well as other health problems such as headaches and period pain, may be helped by chiropractic treatment.
The basic principle of chiropractic is that changes to the normal structure and function of the skeleton and its supporting structures such as the muscles may produce effects not just in those areas, but in other areas of the body and health in general. While the focus has been on the spine, chiropractors view all of the joints, surrounding muscles and nerves as potential sources of problems.

History of chiropractic
The word ‘chiropractic’ comes from the Greek words ‘cheiros’ meaning ‘hand’ and ‘praktikos’ meaning ‘done’. Therefore, it means ‘done by hand’.
Spinal manipulation has been used as a healing technique for thousands of years, but the modern version was developed in the late 19th century. The founder of modern chiropractic, Daniel David Palmer, was more commonly known as DD Palmer. In 1895, he delivered his first chiropractic adjustment. Harvey Lillard was the man to receive this adjustment. He regained his hearing after being partially deaf for 17 years. Following the success of his treatments, DD Palmer went on to open a chiropractic school in 1897 in Davenport, Iowa, from which his son BJ Palmer graduated in 1902.
Chiropractic is recognised as a genuine healthcare approach and published research studies have found that it might be effective for people with a range of spinal and other problems.
